Tutorial - Flightplans, RAD's and FL's

Post by nemesis19 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:53 pm

Hi to All,

I'm going to try and answer a recent post from Mike Lyle, in the form of a short tutorial.

Here's the post from Mike .....

Hi Guys

I have been trying to get a route from LEMD to EDDK to no avail

I have tried entering as new routes:-

got this out of FSBuild 2.3.7.2

LEMD RBO UL184 BAN UN857 LMG UQ237 DISAK UN857 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR EDDK

these 2 off of http://www.vatspa.net

RBO UL184 LARDA UN871 OBUTO UN869 TBO AGN MAKOX BEBIX RAPOR MALUX DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

SIE UN858 DGO UL176 CNA UN858 VALEK UH110 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

All three come up with restrictions. I am not an expert planner

Could any body help with this problem.

I am using Airac cycle 1013 from Navigraph

Best regards

Mike Lyle

One question that comes up every 28 days, when a new Airac cycle comes into effect, is, why this route or that route is no longer valid. What happens is that the Nav Data gets modified, Airways get renamed or their waypoints modified or restrictions (RADs) are put into force, that limit the use of an Airway. These changes may be of a temporary, seasonal or permanent nature, so a route that is valid one month may not be valid the next, however if the changes revert to their original state, then the route becomes valid once again. The route for this Airport combination is one that is no longer valid in the present Airac, because of Airway changes and restrictions in the use of some of those Airways (RADs).

Above Mike has given us three possible routes and we will try to validate at least one.

1. RBO UL184 BAN UN857 LMG UQ237 DISAK UN857 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

This first route gives us a lot of errors regarding flight levels on UN857 and UQ237 between F195...F500 plus a few others, again regarding unavailable FL's, so we will have to forget about this route for the time being, as the switches involved would complicate the flightplan far too much.

2. RBO UL184 LARDA UN871 OBUTO UN869 TBO AGN MAKOX BEBIX RAPOR MALUX DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

The second route is missing the airways in the center part of the route. Vroute expects a route to be in the form... WPT AWY WPT AWY WPT , if it's not then Vroute will give errors similar to this ...

ROUTE144: NO ROUTE BETWEEN MAKOX AND BEBIX
ROUTE144: NO ROUTE BETWEEN BEBIX AND RAPOR
ROUTE49: THE POINT MALUX IS UNKNOWN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ROUTE

So we have to put aside this route as well.

3. SIE UN858 DGO UL176 CNA UN858 VALEK UH110 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

This route looks more promissing, it follows the convention of WPT AWY WPT AWY WPT and if we run it through Vroute we get...

ERROR: Unknown airway/waypoint UH110 (or DIK is not part of UH110, or UH110 is an airway that does not include VALEK)

To go further we need to resolve this part of the route. To do this we need to have a look at the Enroute charts in this area, you can find these charts on the EUROCONTROL Website http://www.eurocontrol.int/aim/public/s ... b_eur.html (free registration), use the link (Free of charge access to AIP of ECAC states) at the top of the page.
We need the Enroute charts for France and Belgium (LF and EB).

If we look in the NE corner of the French chart, we find UN858 to VALEK but it's not very easy to see which airways leave this waypoint, so we now consult the Belgian chart, this shows us that UM163 leaves LUTAX towards DIK VOR. If we return to the French side of the border we find that UM163 also passes through VALEK. Our next step is to change the airway between VALEK and DIK to UM163 and pass this change to Vroute.

SIE UN858 DGO UL176 CNA UN858 VALEK UM163 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

We now have a few new errors.....

PROF: UL176 not available between DGO and CEGAM at FL190..245 (maybe B190 ?)
PROF: UL176 not available between CEGAM and SSN at FL190..245
PROF: UL176 not available between SSN and LUSEM at FL190..245
PROF: UL176 not available between LUSEM and LULUT at FL190..195
PROF: UL176 not available between LULUT and BMC at FL190..195
PROF: UL176 not available between BMC and CNA at FL190..195 (maybe B19 ?)
PROF: UN858 not available between ADABI and BOKNO at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between BOKNO and DEVRO at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between DEVRO and VANAD at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between VANAD and VADOM at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between VADOM and TABOV at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between TABOV and TSU at FL190..195
PROF: UN858 not available between TSU and UTELA at FL190..265
PROF: UN858 not available between UTELA and RANUX at FL190..265
PROF: UN858 not available between RANUX and MEDOX at FL190..195

This is a good point at which to mention Flight Level ranges. I always try to use the maximum range possible, someone flying with a Turboprop may only want to fly a route at say FL240, whereas someone else using a Turbojet/Turbofan, may want to fly a lot higher. If you set the range of FL's too low or high you may be limiting who can use the route. I generally start with a range of FL190...FL460 and then tailor this depending on the results from Vroute.
Here we can see that most of the upper airways start at FL195, some at FL245 and a couple at FL265. So to resolve these errors we need to bring our base Flight Level up to FL270. Lets run this change through Vroute using a Flight Level range of FL270...FL460.

Here's the result.....

PROF205: RS: TRAFFIC VIA LEMD IS OFF MANDATORY ROUTE REF:[LE2184A] RBO

This error is caused by a RAD. RAD's are used to restrict airways and waypoints to Aircraft using certain Airports or certain types of Aircraft, they help ATC with traffic flows through congested Airspace. Normally Vroute will give you a link with this error, that takes you to the RAD mentioned, the code given breaks down to LE-Spain the issuing country 2184- the restriction ID N° followed by a letter that tells us which part of the RAD applies to us. If we click on the link, LE2184A, it opens the RAD for Spain, we search the Doc for 2184 and we find ...

Image

The A in the code tells us that it's the first part of the RAD that applies, so any destination airport code that commences E L or U, with a routing via any of the waypoints mentioned MUST fly via RBO. This means we need to alter our route once again and start it at RBO, however RBO isn't part of UN858, so we need to go back to EUROCONTROL and have a look at the Spanish Enroute chart.

Image

As we can see it's UN867 that takes us from RBO to DGO, so we now amend our route to...

RBO UN867 DGO UL176 CNA UN858 VALEK UM163 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR

This gives us yet another error

PROF204: RS: TRAFFIC VIA LEMD IS ON FORBIDDEN ROUTE REF:[LE2316A] UH130 SIE LPA UN858 SIE DGO UN865 SIE

Again the error refers to a RAD, so lets look up this one...

Image

It's basically telling us that we can't fly above FL345 if we are departing LEMD. Here we have two possibilities...

1.Limit our FL range to conform to this RAD, FL270...FL340 , acceptable to Vroute but does limit the range over the whole flightplan.

2. Use a couple of switches to limit our FL's over part of the route, RBO/N0430F340- UN867 DGO/N0430F270+ UL176 CNA UN858 VALEK UM163 DIK UN853 ARCKY UT853 IBESA T853 NOR , this limits our available flight levels from FL270...FL340 between RBO and DGO. From DGO we can use the whole range once again.

I hope this is of some use to some of you, and that it explains a little, how things work.
