Vroute for iPad?

Post by Clipper 24/7 » Mon Sep 13, 2010 12:34 am

Michal, have you considered making a iPad app version of Vroute?
I find that using the iPad for planning and inflight purposes are perfect.

Also, considered to make the flight progress card as a acrobat form?
So that one could type into it on screen instead of printing?
You know, paperless cockpit.

Put these two together and you have an edge on the market!

Cheers.

Hi Clipper,

it's a cool and exciting idea, and you even made me check out the iPad prices :).

But, to be honest, I can hardly believe in any reasonable business model. I can imagine 3% of vroute's users own an iPad, that's 1500 people. Even if 1/3 of them buy an app for $9.99 (kind high price for an app, isn't it?) minus Apple commission I'd get $3500. Subtract $1000 for the iPad and I'm left with $2500 income. Not the best possible use of time, assuming i'd need to spend 10-20 days minimum to develop the app.

Michal

ps. acrobat forms are cool, but... I cannot produce them on Linux with TeX (at least that's what I believe) and typing on screen without printing contradicts the whole idea of flight progress card being a scratchpad on your knees

Yes, iPad might not be the "thing" everyone have right now,but.. I think this will be a future product that everyone eventually will switch to.
Much more practical for traveling and PERFECT tool for the flight simmers. I must say that it really is a cool product! 8)
I "mount" mine on top of my Saitek Yoke and it's so much more pratical to just have charts and stuff at my fingetips than on a second screen or laptop.

I can't see how it's a contradiction to have the Flight Progress Card being also made electronic.
You could either make it as a "scratchpad" to write on screen or an electroninc acrobat form to type into.
But if it's not possible for you it's another thing. It would be nice though. Only thing I print anymore, is the Flight Progress Card actually.

I would say iPad apps is on average $8. FS Kneeboard by Noah Bryant sells at $7.99. Others twice as much, and some half that.

As a closing word. I bet you a lot, that 2 years from now, everyone will have to make an iPad app to keep up their product.
I've only had mine for 2 weeks, but already spent close to $100 on apps. So I would say apps sell easily.
Check with Noah and ask him on sales and numbers to decide if venturing into iPad is worth it or not for you. :)

I understand your logic, Michal, but I can't help dreaming about an iPad-based vroute! At a minimum, we need a VATSIM/IVAO tracker for the iPad.

yep if this app will be developed well that must be a great app. Also, fully understand your thinking. Probably you could call your friends and make a developing team that will save your work. And you now can enhance the function of the Vroute prem in iPhone. Keeping update will be good strategy now.

Michael, I wonder if you'll reconsider developing an app for the iPad. They are becoming ever more popular and I'd sure buy the app if one was developed. Again, there are more and more iPads out there every day. I know I sure use mine for flight simming. :)

Just wanted to let you know that Vroute works great on my iPad!

I have VNC server installed on my laptop that runs VRoute, AirHauler,Topcat and so on. On my iPad, I have VNC client installed. Works like a charm while wating for the native iPad version :D
